Regular readers of these columns may realise that I don’t make things here take a too overtly politically bias. Whilst good politics and good policies can achieve things, this is more about local events.
But I will mention politics now.
In a rare show of solidarity, a motion in full council in Stockport had the broad support of all groups, although details needed to be worked out. Group leaders also talked about how to get a practical result, rather than use empty, well-meaning words.
And this just before an election!
What was this about?
The forced academisation of all primary and secondary schools across the UK.
Many issues were aired: how well Stockport schools were doing; removal of parent-governors and local connections; the forced giving-away of the school land; the support of the local authority when schools were struggling; good eduction is the future of this land; the possibility of running schools for profit, and much more besides. Schools these days are largely self-governing, and this author for one. cannot see the up-side of this the white paper’s proposed legislation.
Nor, it seems, could the other 61 councillors.

Isn’t this another form of privatisation on the Conservative Government’s part? Another downgrading of education for those who cannot afford private education? The gap between rich and poor getting ever wider?
