Boundary Commission propose Marple and Hyde constituency

by Geoff Abell on 25 October, 2016

HazelGrove wards The current Hazel Grove constituency and its 6 wards

(The proposal is to lose Offerton and Hazel Grove wards (bottom left) and add 4 new Hyde wards to the North.)

The Boundary Commission for their review in 2018 have a hard job: as well as reducing the number of constituencies to 600, each parliamentary seat should have an electorate between the relatively narrow bounds of an electorate between 71,031 and 78,507 (except the Isle of Wight).

This came out of the ideas of the former PM, David Cameron, partly as a reaction to the expenses scandals.  Meanwhile the unelected Lords continues to grow and are now fast approaching 1000 in number.

This means only 14 of the 75 NW England seats are unaffected and many go across borough boundaries.  The proposed seat of Marple and Hyde would include 4 wards from Stockport and 4 wards from Tameside, as follows.

Marple and Hyde (74,907)

Bredbury and Woodley                Stockport           10,358

Bredbury Green and Romiley      Stockport           10,615

Marple North                                 Stockport           9,622

Marple South                                 Stockport           9,619

Hyde Godley                                   Tameside            8,436

Hyde Newton                                 Tameside            9,989

Hyde Werneth                               Tameside            8,514

Longdendale                                   Tameside            7,754

Please note that local ward and borough boundaries are not changing.

This is now open to consultation.
