There was some sporadic flooding locally last week, including a stream that diverted itself down Longhurst Lane in Mellor after a culvert was blocked!
Local response was outstanding, including a building firm that donated sand for sandbags. Lessons should also be learnt about maintenance of water flows; this could have been worse, although it was poor for the 3 or so flooded houses.

(The eagle-eyed amongst you will notice that the above picture was actually taken on Brabyns Brow and the flow was a fraction of that on Longhurst Lane.)

Our lane ( between Longhurst Lane and Low Lea Road) was badly damaged because of the flooding. We have only in the last year had it made good by United Utilities after the burst water main on Longhurst Lane. Can you tell me who is responsible for this as it is an unadopted road? It is in a terrible state and very difficult and unsafe to waik on. Any help
to solve this problem would be much appreciated.
In relation to the flooding. As a resident of woodbrook which was affected badly. Can you please be more specific in terms of what lessons were learnt and what’s being done as a long term solution as a matter of urgency to ensure this is avoided in the future?
Good question.
Firstly the culvert must be maintained and cleared. Currently it is the builder’s responsibility, which doesn’t make sense.
In addition the response might have been quicker and we’ve been told that the Environment Agency are ultimately responsible.
At the time, it was great to see neighbours working so well together and I am glad it wasn’t worse – it could have been so easily.
