by Geoff Abell on 27 March, 2017

In glorious sunshine on Saturday, the Incredible Edible Marple Orchard was planted.

The mayor and mayoress, Chris and Margaret Gordon, attended

Some local residents did have reservations, but there were consultation and legal-checking exercises.  When the tree bear fruit, the apples, pears, cherries, plums and nuts will be for all.

    1. The orchard seems a worthy initiative. I THINK I caught sight of its location on the Oldknow Road side of Arkwright Road Recreation Ground. Is that right? People seem very coy in describing its location in a way which everyone will understand. I have seen people describing it as ‘on Marple Rec’. ‘Rec’ is a childhood term for a location with swings, slides etc. There are several such facilities in different parts of Marple. Please give this initiative the dignity of a proper description of its location, using its full and formal name in any printed material about it.

    2. There seems to be permanent traffic gridlock in central Marple at the moment. I sat through 4 changes of traffic lights before I could turn from Lower Hibbert Lane on to Stockport Road this morning. This is a frequent occurrence, even when there aren’t any road works going on. Can we use circumstances like this as a weapon to fight the proposal for massive housebuilding in the area? The roads are inadequate NOW. No mass housebuilding should be contemplated until there is a cast iron plan to upgrade the local road system to cope with the extra traffic. Without that, daily life will become impossible.
