Mobile speed cameras for Marple

by Geoff Abell on 24 September, 2017

From the end of Oct Marple will have a mobile speed camera.

Where would you like it to be?  Are there any hot spots?

I already have suggestions for Arkwright Road, Hollins Lane (Marple) and Station Road.

From Mellor in the North to High Lane in the South, please let us know areas you consider where speed is hazardous.

I am delighted to know that speed cameras are to be in operation. They are really needed on Compstall Road in Marple Bridge especially late at night usually around 11pm or later. My daughter and I walk our dog then and have been horrified by speeding cars going so fast we haven’t had a chance to get the number plate. There have often been three to five cars In one night and we have feared they could have mounted the pavement. This has been both ways we walk from no 162 towards the Spring Gardens and back. The roads are fairly empty then so these reckless drivers have taken advantage. These speed cameras should put a stop to it before something tragic happens. THANK Y0U. Ruth Owens and Emma

    • Geoff Abell says:

Compstall road seems to be a particular problem with residents, even with the parked car issue causing narrowing of the roads. But there are many others.
Thanks to all those who have replied so far.

      • Frank says:

The cars come round the Windsor Castle onto Glossop road and pick up speed they do not seem to realise that there is a blind corner just past cote green and one of these days this speeding could cause a serious accident

  2. Claire Hughes says:

Cross Lane. This road is used as a ‘rat run’ from Hibbert Lane. The speed bumps are completely ineffective.

  3. Anita Ford says:

Please could Longhurst Lane around the Knowle Lane junction be considered; it’s very busy with children from the primary school down Knowle Lane at drop off & pick up times yet cars speed down & up the road I’m guessing at up to 50mph plus when it’s actually a 20mph zone. I see them speeding regularly as I live just near the said junction. I have children at said Primary school so I’m particularly interested in getting speed cameras placed there, or at least speed bumps. In fact, a couple of years ago when I was driving out of my driveway, a car was speeding down Longhurst Lane and didn’t see me in time, he had to swerve right and crashed into several cars which then ploughed into a house opposite my house. I dread to think what would’ve happened if there were pedestrians on the pavement.

    Thank you.

  4. Miss L Malpas says:

Hibbert Lane approaching marple centre. Cars speed down there to get through lights and are frequently jumping the pedestrian crossing lights. Both myself and other people have almost been knocked down at this crossing.

  5. Karen says:

Speed cameras are definitely required on Glossop Rd, Marple Bridge. Half way up from Windsor Castle

  6. Peter Williams says:

Anywhere there is a 20mph speed limit. Few motorists (except me) obey these. If these limits were enforced then that might solve the anomaly; are the limits necessary and so should be enforced or are they a joke and should be abandoned?

  7. Shirley Potkins says:

Higher than the school in Longhurst Lane. I know there are obstructions on the road, but in between the cars just speed up.

  8. Tony Wilkinson says:

Not sure if High Lane id included but it would be interesting to have data as opposed to feelings about speed in certain locations.Opposite the Church in High Lane on the A6 is a speed camera; I have been trying to find out now for over 2 years, if it is working, if it as switched on, and what was the date of the last speeding recorded by it. 2 MPs have failed to find the answer. Rossell Avenue SK6 8DT has a theoretical 20mph speed limit. I reckon that 30 is the statistical median speed here with many 40+. The council and the police seem to think that the other party has responsibility for enforcement. Publish and be damned.

  9. Alan darnell says:

north of the bridge on Windlehurst Road down to the bridge is a crtical area, particullary as i have learnt we will not get our traffic calming measurs until 18 months after the MARR is complete . Cars speed down to the lights .

  10. alma.royle says:

I have noticed the camera’s on the main roads. How does this help the problems the residents of Edwards Way have with excessive traffic due to this road being used as a shortcut to Stockport Road. When the 92 houses are occupied at the top of Edwards Way this road will be like the M1.
So far even with the petitions I have handed in there seems to be little progress in the actions for the problems on this road.
    Alma Royle.

    • Geoff Abell says:

Those cameras are for a specific report on usage by vehicles and pedestrians rather than for speeding traffic. They will go over the next few weeks. I believe the highways team are looking at the petition, but I will ask my Marple South colleagues.

  11. Stephen Worth says:

Compstall Road on the Marple Bridge direction before the junction with Ernocroft Road.

  12. Norma Murray says:

Re mobile speed camera. Compstall Road and especially the hill bends can be a nightmare, I have been overtaken by cars at speed on those bends. The road has speeding traffic particularly after 7pm

  13. Nancy Palmer says:

Mobile speed cameras are most welcome. Please could we have one at corner of George Street and Montagu Street? One péson has already been knocked down and sustained serious injuries because of speeding there.

  14. Claire Gill says:

Longhurst Lane where it meets Knowle Road, Mellor. PS. Cars speed past, exceeding 30mph, yet alone the 20mph sped limit there.

  15. Chris Buckley says:

I suggest an additional place on Longhurst Lane – between Clement road and cataract bridge. The lack of a pavement on the side with houses makes speeding particularly dangerous.

  16. Kevin Smith says:

Hibbert lane from the canal bridge towards Marple. The speed bumps are a waste of time.

  17. mollie Watteson says:

Rather thankful that I no longer live on Longhurst Lane where there is, as far as I can remember, a footpath only on one side of the road which must make it difficult for the residents.

  18. Deb Cavanagh says:

I was in touch with Sue Ingham a few months ago about this & am pleased we’re finally getting one. My concern is Strines Road. Since moving here in January we’ve been amazed & horrified at the excessive speeds (50 mph+) seen at all times day & night, & the reckless overtaking of any vehicles keeping to the speed limit. Only last week we saw a car overtake 5 others in a no overtaking zone on the approach to a bend.

  19. Sylvia Etchells says:

The straighter stretches of Strines Road. The bit heading towards Strines from the canal bridge in Marple to the Arkwright Road junction is particularly bad and the static digital speed warning device is frequently ignored and speeds of well in excess of 30 mph are frequently observed being ignored by drivers. The straight stretch on Strines Road after the junction with Lower Strines Road until the next set of bends is also particularly bad.

  20. Deb Cavanagh says:

Great I was in touch with Sue Ingham about this earlier in the year & am pleased the cameras are imminent. Strines Road is of great concern. High speeds both day & evening, & reckless overtaking of vehicles adhering to the speed limit makes it a risky place to be, both as a road user & a pedestrian.

  21. Paul Cavanagh says:

Strines Road in Marple. There are daily multiple incidents of vehicles driving at 50/60 mph in a 30 mph zone coupled with suicidalovertaking near bends in the road.

  22. ALVIN FELL says:

Longhurst Lane – by the Cataract Bridge / between Royal Oak and Highfield Road

  23. Brian Evans says:

I would suggest cameras being placed on Stockport Road mid-way between the pedestrian crossing near the junction with Dale Road and the traffic lights at the intersection with Station Road and Church Lane. Outside of commuter periods the stretch from Dan Bank to the traffic lights provides the opportunity for vehicles to exceed the speed limit, and the ‘blind spot’ at the Rose Hill station bridge is a particularly dangerous location as vehicles gain speed

  24. Ian Moss says:

There seem to be a lot of strong candidites for the camera. I suggest Station Road-I and many others cross it a lot-what about a pedestrian crossing? (I would thnk that anywhere children in particular are in danger shud take precedence.)

    • Geoff Abell says:

You are right – there are many places and we’ll collate them. Thanks to all who have commented.

The idea of crossings near the station or canal has been suggested too. We should pursue that.

  25. Barry Freeman says:

I live at 253 Stockport road marple and would like to see a speed camera outside on the main road outside my house as cars are always speeding on this stretch of road

  26. Peter Stewart says:

I note that no thought is given to the motorists in these articles. May I suggest for several reasons including the impact on emissions , damage to vehicles suspension, and in my case pain in my spine caused by traversing the speed bumps (at legal speed) that the damn things are dug up and the remains used to fill in the potholes that are ignored by Stockport Council.
