New and increased Car Park charging

by Geoff Abell on 2 November, 2017

Labour-run Stockport Council are proposing to change the charges for car parks.

Stockport centre car parks will be charged at 80 p per hour for the first two hours.

Perhaps more importantly to us, free car parks near stations in district centres will be charged.  Which means that the two car parks – those near Marple Bridge: Brabyns Brow (near the Midland) and the station overspill car park (near the Purple Pakora) – will now be charged in future.  If this plan goes ahead.  In district centres, the proposed fee is 50 p for the first 2 hours, 60 p for 3 then an extra 20 p per hour.

This will be open to consultation.  When it is, please have your say here:

We are already getting cars parked in Winnington Rd and Ley Hey which causes difficulties when approaching the junctions with Station Rd. It will only get worse as people try to avoid parking charges on Brabyns Brow.

As per conversation with Geoff recently…Marple residents who use the train regularly should be given a Permit to park as keeping people using the trains will stop our roads getting even more congested….people from other areas who drive into Marple thus filling up the carparks should be made to pay

Having read the Council’s proposals for car parking charges in Stockport, two words stand out against all other rationale, “increases revenue”. This blinkered self serving policy contains no appreciation of the impact of such proposals. I can help there. It will lead to the decimation of businesses in the district centres. It will lead to the congestion of side streets close to railway stations. It will lead to an increase in traffic and pollution on the main arterial routes as train passengers take the cheaper option of using their cars. It will lead to a pathetic short term increase in revenue that will die off as people turn to other options.

It’s about time we heard of some inspirational thinking from our elected representatives. What about managed free parking inspiring investment in district centres. It happens in other areas. More businesses paying their taxes and people shopping locally would be a worthwhile goal and dare I say will “increase revenue” in a more sustainable way.

The proposal to charge for parking at Marple and other stations is ludicrous. The whole point of the free parking is to encourage people to take the train into central Manchester and reduce congestion in the streets of Stockport and other Manchester Boroughs. The proposal is bound to lead to even longer road journeys into and out of Marple at peak hours and unwanted streeet parking in the local neighbourhood. Essentially these car parks form part of a sensible Manchester-wide “park and ride” strategy. The argument ought to be for making all station car parks free, rather than imposing new charges.
