From 24th July, the A6 in Stockport town centre will be closed from Exchange Street (Garrick Theatre) to Heaton Lane for up to 12 weeks to allow essential repair work to take place. Stockport is still open for business during the works and there are lots of ways you’ll be able to travel into and around Stockport.

The good news is that the new 2-lanes-each-way on St Mary’s Way (the road from Longshut Lane to the motorway) will be open for then as this will be a major diversion on the east side.

Why are there so many roadworks going on at one time? To get from Marple to Wilmslow which we do 4 times a week there are roadworks on every route. Took one and a half hours last Wednesday to get home.
It is a busy time (see my reply to others). In connection with other routes, Greek St should now be open as an A6 alternative. The following is also relevant:
* Gas emergency works currently taking place on New Bridge Lane at the bottom of Stockport Road West with a lane out approaching Stockport. Two way traffic being maintained. Works associated Cadent (new name for Gas network). Currently should be a problem with traffic flow.
* Gas emergency works currently taking place on Bramhall Lane South at junction with Ladythorne Road. Temporary signals in operation. Hope to complete before 24/07.
* Electricity North West planned works on Garners Lane, Davenport temporary signals to be clear by 23/07. On track
* Electricity North West planned works on Chester Road at Woodford Road roundabout, Woodford. Temporary 3-way traffic signal control should be completed last weekend.
Hope this helps.
