Stockport Elections 2019 – results

by Geoff Abell on 3 May, 2019

Last night’s local elections saw Lib Dems do very well, taking Marple North, Marple South & High Lane and Bredbury Green & Romiley wards (where the Tory group leader had been a cllr) with big majorities – wards the Tories won 4 years ago. Lib Dems also took Hazel Grove and Stepping Hill from the sitting Tory councillors. Labour gained Manor. Particular good, when national politics is in a mess, to see a 45% turnout in both Marple wards.

Marple North result
Becky Senior, Lib Dem, 2225 – 51% – majority 1285
Con – 940
Lab – 803
Green – 406

Marple South and High Lane
Aron Thornley, Lib Dem, 2037 – 46% – majority 1007
Ind (former Con cllr for this ward) – 1030
Con – 682
Lab – 477
Green – 233

On the night, wards won were – Lib Dems 10, Labour 8, Cons 2 and Ratepayers 1.
This leaves the council in a knife-edge situation:
Labour 26 (was 25)
Lib Dems 26 (was 21)
Con 8 (was 12)
Heald Green Ratepayers 3 (was 3)
Others 0 (was 2)

    Brilliant effort; great result
Glad to have done a bit to help.

Creates a platform for Lisa to win the Hazel Grove seat.

First of all congratulations. Following the coalition government between 2010 – 2015 I vowed I’d never vote LibDem again and the results in subsequent elections suggested I wasn’t the only one..Voting tactically to keep the Tories out only to have Lib Dems facilitate the Tory ideological austerity programme made me sick. I voted LibDem this time, predominantly because of your position on Brexit when compared to the stance taken by Tories and Labour. I note the council is “on a knife edge”. PLEASE DO NOT LET ME DOWN AGAIN!

What good results in Marple. And across the country. I wish we could have done more, but congratulations to all those involved in helping to prove the LibDems are still a force in the land.

Fortunately it’s council tax these days, but it doesn’t spoil what you are saying. Noted.

Well done Becky! but please remember it is not only about Marple Bridge, Millbrow, Mellor and Compstall. We in Marple also pay poll tax and Marple town centre could do with some updating. The pavements and some of the shop fronts are in a shocking state . How some of them have got planning permission to do what they have done is beyond me. What is being done with the old Post Office? that is one of the first things people see when they drive into Marple. AN EYE SORE. so you see it isn’t only about conservation in Marple Bridge and the surrounding areas. Regards B Heginbotham
