After the good wins for Lib Dems in the local elections, both in Marple and across the borough of Stockport (and indeed 700+ more councillors across the UK), the results of the Euro elections, brought unprecedented results.
Lib Dems topped the votes in both Marple North and Marple South & High Lane, and across Stockport as a whole. Marple North ward had a turnout of 48% for the Euros, one of the biggest on the night.
In the North West region Lib Dems now have 2 MEPs who started the job on Thurs – Chris Davies and Jane Brophy. Good luck to them: who knows what the future holds? The Lib Dems will continue to fight to let UK voters decide what happens next with a People’s Vote.
Nationally the Lib Dems came second overall with 16 MEPs (20% of the total votes cast) across the country and topped the polls in London. Generally remain parties showed an increase in support.
In the end, for the Conservatives, June proved to be the end of May following three years of chaos for the UK.
Across the rest of Europe, Liberal and Green parties did particularly well, defying the prediction of a far-right surge in most countries. The EU continues to be a force for peace and prosperity.
And the people of Marple were a part of that. Thank you all so much whether you talked to us, shared our values, voted for us or helped out!
