Lord Peter Smith announces the launch of the Taking Charge Together campaign for improving health and social services across Greater Manchester.

We’re asking many thousands of people across Greater Manchester to share their thoughts on what helps and stops them living  a healthier life, as we prepare to take charge of the £6 billion health and social care budget following the devolution agreement in February 2015.

The campaign will give us the chance to hear – in people’s own voices – of their struggles and successes, as well as asking them to share any successful and even radical ways of helping people be healthier.

People can join a conversation about everything from exercise and smoking to sleep and stress by going to the following site.

We once had free swimming for pensioners, but Stockport pulled the funding. Swimming is still free in Manchester!!

The cost for pensioners on a low income to keep fit at a local Gym is expensive. Marple gym is too small, and you can’t get on the equipment. There are many restrictions at Marple pool. For example the Gym on a Thursday morning is used for the Paris group, so members can’t go to the gym that morning unless they go early morning when it’s packed. We need better fitness facilities for High Lane and Marple. High Lane has very few facilities, with poor bus services hardly any shops, so pensioner are trapped if they haven’t got a car.

High Lane and Marple need better facilities.

I would point out that we do have the 394 from Marple to High Lane to Stepping Hill; not perfect, but this service was threatened with closure a few months back.
