2016 Election Results in Marple and Stockport

by Geoff Abell on 6 May, 2016

In summary, Marple North elected a Liberal Democrat, Malcolm Allan, by 592 votes and Marple South a Conservative, Tom Dowse, by 23.

Congratulations to both.  It was a hard-fought contest in both wards, as witnessed by the high turnout – 49% and 46%, unusual for a local election and some of the largest across Stockport.

In the 6 Hazel Grove constituency wards, the Lib Dems proved to be remarkable strong.  Congratulations to Jon Twigge, winning in Hazel Grove (MP Will Wragg’s old ward), Lisa Smart in Bredbury Green & Romiley (ward with Tory leader) winning by 842, Laura Booth in Offerton (against a strong Labour campaign) and Christine Corris in Bredbury & Woodley.

Overall in the 21 wards of the Stockport Borough, results were as follows:

Lib Dems 9
Labour 8,
Conservatives 3,
Ind Ratepayers 1.

Net Lib Dems lost 1 to Labour and 1 in Marple South to the Tories, although the Tories did not repeat their success in wards they won in 2015.

The Labour gain was in Manor ward against the current council leader, and it means that Labour are now the largest group.  So an interesting night for all.

Labour  23,
Lib Dems 21,
Conservatives 14,
Heald Green Ratepayers 3,
Inds 2

We also note that former Withington MP John Leech has been returned as councillor for Didsbury West, meaning Manchester City Council is no longer 100% Labour.
