High Lane 4,000 house development

At an extraordinary meeting of the Marple Area Committee in High Lane on Wed 30th Nov, many residents expressed concerns over this development as part of the GMSF.  Infrastructure issues such as rail, roads schools and use of Stepping Hill Hospital were mentioned.  Also air quality, road capacity and the sheer vastness of the proposed development.  (To give you an idea, this would create a new, 7th ward in the 6-ward Hazel Grove constituency.)

The objections are not just for High Lane, they are for the conurbations and towns of Stockport, providing the green lungs that benefit health and well-being, and presenting urban sprawl.

All 6 Marple councillors expressed objections and words of support for the comments of most who were there.

The following night Lib Dem councillors also did something about it.  On Thurs 1 Dec in Full Council, we proposed adopting a local Stockport plan rather than the GMSF one with the 4,000 homes in High Lane and 12,100 across the borough.  This idea was squashed by Tories and Labour ganging up; in addition, they voted to stop any form of debate on the issue.

What counts is deeds not words my political friends!

Cllr Mark Hunter said: “This is a huge disappointment for us, and more importantly for local residents, but it is not the end. This is a Stockport issue and I still believe the decision should be made here in Stockport.”

Cllr Lisa Smart, who seconded the rejected amendment, said: “This is another example of Liberal Democrats standing up for local residents, and Conservatives’ hypocrisy and Labour’s complacency towards the people of Stockport’

“This whole process has just been about where is easiest and cheapest to build on, not where is most appropriate for the average family and future generations.

“It means nothing to the residents of Stockport to tell them you’re against building on greenbelt, and then not support this amendment today.
