A sad day for all of Europe

by Geoff Abell on 29 March, 2017

So today, UK’s PM Theresa May has invoked Lisbon article 50.

Having been through democratic, legal and parliamentary hoops, is this the right thing to do? Yes

Does it need to be ‘hard’? No

Is this the best for the UK (or even the EU)? No

Is it irreversible? No

The EU is unique: a free association of democratic nations, coming together with culture and economy. Of course we can go. (I seem to remember the US had a civil war, partly about that question.)

But we will be the worse for it. Devaluation of the pound and consequent increase in shop prices is only the start. We will survive, but why not flourish? With one of the biggest world debts and violence on the increase around the world, we should make more friends, not less.

    D. Cameron made a big mistake even thinking about a referendum. He was more concerned about the Tory party than the rest of the world. He wanted to keep the Eurosceptic right in his sights for the long term interests (?) of the party.
We now have a brutalist and divided country where culture and society no longer count. Everything is ‘money.’
Eurosceptic Tories should have been more honest. They should have left the party and joined UKIP where they belong and I include Gove and Johnson. More aware pro-Europeans could then have joined a centre party to create a better balance and better represent the wishes of the rest of us. I didn’t vote for Brexit and I didn’t vote for Cameron. Why do I now feel no one represents me. Though Nick Clegg might!

I agree entirely. I am still very, very annoyed about the EU referendum. We should never have been asked to vote on something that very few people knew very much about. I still don’t understand what people voted for, when they asked to leave the EU.
